Northern Vermont Resource Center
VCDHH created the Northern Vermont Resource Center in attempt to identify and address the needs of Vermont adults who are deaf and hard of hearing and who also present with additional disabilities. This program is in its infancy and we are excited about the potential for our clients as we collaborate with existing agencies to develop resources that will enable us all to work more effectively with this specialized population.
The Center operates out of the Williston office. The Coordinator acts as the case manager and direct service provider for adults served by the center. The Coordinator also networks and interacts with educational, vocational rehabilitation, mental health providers, parents, business community contacts and the Deaf Community. It is the coordinator’s responsibility to research, evaluate and recommend potential new and/or expanded services in northern Vermont and explore funding for such endeavors.
At the present time the following services are available through the Center.
1. Adult service – Individuals who are deaf with additional disabilities can receive necessary community and employment support, counseling and recreational opportunities that will allow them to remain in their home community.
2. Assistive Technology – The assistive technology equipment demonstration display unit is housed at the Center. It consists of a variety of equipment and devices designed to address communication and accessibility issues for individuals who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, late deafened or deaf-blind.
3. Vermont Telecommunication Equipment Distribution Program (EDP) – The Center is also responsible for this program in northern Vermont. EDP purchases telecommunication equipment for individuals who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, late deafened deaf-blind or disabled. The program has income guidelines. 4. Sign Language Classes – Classes are offered periodically throughout the year in various locations. There is a registration fee.
